These began with the “Color Study of the Historic Center of Málaga,” followed by the “Restoration Project for Singular Urban Environments,” and subsequent individualized chromatic studies culminating in the Málaga Color Master Plan. Move past the Andalusian cliché of traditional whitewashing, our research uncovered vibrant Baroque-style frescoed walls—highly colorful and artistic features awaiting comprehensive restoration.

We surveyed all 1,500 buildings within the historic center, tracing and identifying historical pigments that were already regulated by 16th-century medieval ordinances, which dictated specific colors based on the building typology and materials to be used. Historical Spanish terms such as albayalde (white lead), cardenillo (verdigris), and prieto (dark-earth tones) found their modern, codified equivalents through our technical color-matching process for the new Color Master Plan. Furthermore, each historical period and architectural style from the 16th to the 20th century was assigned its own validated chromatic combinations along with guidelines for the most appropriate rehabilitation processes, while economically budgeting the highest-priority interventions.

The operational challenge this posed to municipal services led to the comprehensive database mapping (GIS), a structural recataloging of landmarks, the incorporation of professional conservators across numerous construction sites, and the strict monitoring of all ongoing works, backed by municipal funding and the EU Urban Programme. This extensive urban revitalization initiative was recognized by the United Nations (UN-Habitat) with the “Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment” Award, presented in 1999 in Dubai.

[27
post-4473","portfolio","type-portfolio","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","portfolio_category-color-plans
["GET
